Who's listening?

"It's a shame that the people who are listening to you the most are only interested in you because they want you and your peers to buy their product."
As bad as this quote sounds at first, there are many different perspectives to it. The first critical perspective is that people only listen to us (teens) to make money and how this is sad because teens feel that they have something to say and want to be heard. One good thing about this is that because we are listened to about the marketing of things, we'll have the things that we want like clothes, electronics, etc. available to us if we want to buy them. I'm not sure how valid this quote really is, I mean in politics young adults can vote and are extremely encouraged to do so. Also in school when we have ethics days and discussions about New Trier life, I feel that what students think matters to faculty and the administration and that learning this can make school a better place and environment for future students. Reasons like those make me feel that this quote is not 100% valid but considering how much money is on the teen market, it makes a good argument.

The Bravery

For our music heritage project I picked The Bravery, an indie-rock recent band from NY. What's cool about their influences is that they are all from the 80's and all British. Because of their UK influences they have a pretty cool sound similar to The Killers. The three heritage artists that I picked for The Bravery were, Duran Duran, The Cure, and The Smiths.
I would not say that the Bravery really represent the values of our generation. It's hard to really clearly define what our values are but I don't think this band is trying to do this. The majority of there songs have clever titles that incorporate the main line of the chorus and the rest of the song is a collection of clever rhymes that tell a story or describe a relationship. Because of the basis of their lyrics I would not say the Bravery are trying to represent our culture purposely or just by the nature of their music, they are just a good sounding indie band.

Elvis

In Pop Culture class we watched a movie about Elvis and I learned a lot about how he became the legend that he is today. I had no idea how much he changed the industry of music and how fast he became successful in his career. But more than anything I was refreshed with how amazing he was at performing. Here's a clip of Elvis Presley from 1956 on the Milton Berle show performing Hound Dog.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers would have to be one of my favorite bands. Ever since I was a kid I loved their music and enjoyed listening to them. I started listening to them in middle school religiously and at the time I was learning guitar and started playing some their songs. One thing that's cool about them is that they have been playing together for over twenty years and they're still making new music.
